Spiritual bathing is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. Long before wellness was an industry, cultures across Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Indigenous Americas understood water as medicine — not just for the physical body, but for the spiritual and emotional body as well.
At Yeye’s, our spiritual bath soaks are rooted in the Yoruba tradition and the sacred waters of Ọ̀ṣun — the Orisa of fresh water, rivers, sweetness, love, and healing. Each preparation is formulated by a clinical herbalist using botanicals chosen for both their traditional spiritual significance and their documented clinical actions.
What Is a Spiritual Bath?
A spiritual bath is a ritual bathing practice in which herbs, salts, flowers, oils, and other botanical preparations are added to water with a specific intention. Unlike a regular bath, a spiritual bath is approached as a conversation — between you, the plants, the water, and whatever forces you work with spiritually.
In Yoruba and African diasporic traditions, ritual baths are used to:
- Cleanse the aura and remove spiritual heaviness
- Attract love, abundance, or positive energy
- Provide spiritual protection and boundary setting
- Open communication with ancestors and spirit guides
- Restore hormonal, nervous system, and emotional balance
- Honor the Orisa and sacred spiritual forces
The plants are not decoration. They are the medicine. Each herb carries intelligence, tradition, and a documented relationship with the human body that spans centuries.
How to Prepare Your Spiritual Bath
1. Set Your Intention Before You Begin
Choose your bath based on what you actually need — not what sounds appealing. Are you clearing something heavy? Calling in love? Protecting your energy? Restoring your connection to your womb? The intention you bring to the bath determines what the medicine is doing. If you are unsure, sit quietly for a moment before you begin and ask your body what it needs.
2. Clean the Physical Space First
This is not about perfection. It is about signaling to the Universe and the space, almost like a beacon. When you clean the bathroom before a ritual bath, you are communicating to yourself and to the unseen world that something intentional is happening here. Light a candle. Open a window if you can. Remove clutter.
3. Prepare the Bath
Fill your tub with warm water. Add your Yeye’s bath soak — approximately 4–6 tablespoons, or the full contents for a full ceremonial bath — and swirl the water with your hand as you add it. As you do this, speak your intention aloud or silently. You are having a conversation, and that in itself is part of the ritual.
4. Enter With Awareness
Step into the bath slowly. Allow your body to settle into the water. Breathe. Let the herbs begin to work. The skin is the largest organ of the body — it absorbs, it receives, it releases. Give it time to do all three.
5. Soak for at Least 20 Minutes
The minimum time for a therapeutic herbal bath is 20 minutes. Many traditions recommend 30 to 40 minutes, especially for deeper spiritual work. Use this time for prayer, meditation, or simply breathing and receiving. As you bath, if you have herbs free floating in the water or in an organic muslin cloth, rub your body with it as you are speaking and integrating with your intention.
6. After the Bath
In many traditions, you do not rinse off after a spiritual bath — you allow the water to dry on your skin so the medicine is fully absorbed. Pat dry gently. Dress in clean clothes if possible. Rest. Avoid immediately returning to heavy digital stimulation. Give the medicine time to land.

A Note on the Plants
Every botanical in a Yeye’s spiritual bath soak has been chosen for both its spiritual lineage and its clinical herbal action. Mugwort clears and opens the dreaming mind — it is also an emmenagogue with documented effects on the uterus and nervous system. Rose is sacred to all women and female deities — it is also a nervine, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory. The plants do not separate their physical medicine from their spiritual medicine. Neither do we.
This is what it means to practice medicine as relationship.
